Chacala - a favourite thus far?
Epic sunsets, a gorgeous malecon, a secret beach, friend time, beach beers and our first really swell-y anchorage. We absolutely fell in love with Chacala, and can’t believe so many miss out on it!
San Blas/Matanchen - Jan 14-16 2022
Noseums, mosquitos and crocodiles, oh my! Surrounded by the green of palm trees and small palapas, regaled by the happy screams of children and absolutely eaten alive by tiny bugs, our time in Matenchen and San Blas had all the things.
Images of Isla Isabel - a short video
A short video of highlights from our adventures on Isla Isabel
Incredible Isla Isabel - January 10-14, 2022
Touted as the “mini-Galapagos of Mexico”, we had an incredible couple days observing birds, tip-toeing around iguanas and soaking up hours and hours of humpback whale activity.
Notes from a nasty night at sea.
Describing our passage from Mazatlan to the magical island of Isla Isabel - and some of the mishaps along the way.
It’s all fun and games until you find mold/mould!
Just the thing you want to do when you’ve been laid up and sick for a few days - scrub down the boat for mold!
Catching up on our 2021 major upgrades
A very belated post on the upgrades we completed in 2021. We’re now 90% off-grid with the exception of our diesel engines, which we hope to use less frequently as we sail to Panama. La Paz was an excellent base to complete the projects and we were extremely happy with the contractors that we used there.
Have yourselves a very Skookum New Year
All our apologies for our radio silence for the past four and a half months while we’ve been living it up! We had a 6 week trip to Canada, some adventures in Phoenix, a month on the boat yard in Puerto Peñasco, a whirlwind trip down the Baja to La Paz, more boat work in La Paz, a spirited crossing of the Sea of Cortez to Mazatlan, and now three weeks of luxury in Mazatlan.
Doing some adulting. Less fun, but necessary.
Surprise! Skookum V has been pulled out of the water, and we find ourselves back in Puerto Peñasco, the town from whence we launched the boat back in January! Why, you may ask? As my dear friend Julie said to me this morning, we’re ‘doing some adulting. Less fun but necessary.’ We’re here to tackle a few tasks including getting our second Covid-19 vaccination, fixing a rotten bulkhead in the boat, buying some boat parts, and possibly flying home to visit family and friends in Canada.
MEA CULPA Y LO SIENTO (my fault, and I'm sorry for lack of posts!)
It has been an inexcusable amount of time since our last post. While we've been regularly updating Instagram and Facebook as to our adventures, I've completely neglected the blog. So, now that we have access to some solid internet for a little while, it's time for some catch-up.
Wondrous Whale Sharks
The most magical of experiences yet. As we pulled up to the village of Bahia de los Angeles, our intended pit stop for the morning to stock up on some fresh produce and a little time on the local wifi, we saw a panga with people swimming just off it. I ask Stu what was in the water, and he said ‘Someone’s head…wait, no, I think it is a whale shark’. Never more than an arm’s reach away, I pulled the binoculars to my face and saw a rounded dorsal fin poking out of the water. A whale shark! A real whale shark, in-person! I started jumping up and down on the spot, absolutely elated we were seeing one, even if it was several hundred meters away.
Sucking up the sea state
I remember reading in several different places that the cruising lifestyle has the biggest highs and the biggest lows, and wondering how anyone could feel lows when choosing their own destiny and ‘living a dream’. I’m starting to think it isn’t so much about highs and lows, but rather more about just feeling everything more. Everything seems bigger and more real when you’re surfing this big floating bus up and down the waves, and wondering if you’ll actually make it to the next port.
Calla Puertocito De Enmedio
Time changes with kids are not fun. This morning the girls woke up an hour early as we crossed to the Baja. Calla Puertocito de Enmedio, the anchorage we are in, is really lovely, and feels quintessential Baja save for the fact the water isn’t quite as turquoise as we’ve become accustomed to further south.
Time in Bahia De Los Angeles
A little reflection on some of the most relaxing time we’ve spent to-date in Mexico.
